How can you avoid this? Turn off the water to your home when you leave (unless, of course, the kids are staying behind). Water damage from broken pipes is not easy to deal with.
When you do have the unfortunate luck of a broken pipe or water coming into your home, clean it up quick. If you don't have the time or the resources, call a water damage company right away. You don't want mold or mildew to start to grow in your basement from water intrusion.
